When AUC opened its doors in 2009, it was guided by a bold vision. Educational leaders, including founding Dean Marijk van der Wende, saw the need for a distinctive Liberal Arts and Sciences programme in Amsterdam: one that would challenge students intellectually, nurture their curiosity across disciplines, and inspire them to engage with global issues and social impact. With the combined strength of the University of Amsterdam and VU Amsterdam, that vision became a reality at our Science Park campus. 

Sixteen years on, AUC has grown into a thriving community where learning and living are deeply interconnected. Our small-scale, residential setting brings students and staff together in ways that spark creativity, collaboration, and connection. From research on youth peacebuilding, to grassroots endeavours like Open Tech, to initiatives such as Right2Education, where students teach and learn alongside refugees, the spirit of engagement runs through everything we do. 

Innovation in education has always been part of AUC’s DNA. Over the years, our staff have explored new teaching methods and designed courses that cross boundaries between the Sciences, Social Sciences, and Humanities. For example, examining time through geological, philosophical, and literary perspectives, or linking chemistry and art history. Recent projects supported by Comenius grants, along with the introduction of AI literacy into our curriculum, highlight how AUC continues to evolve and remain at the forefront of educational change. 

But the true heart of AUC is its people. Our dedicated faculty and support staff, including colleagues from VU and UvA who teach at AUC and create an atmosphere of care and collaboration. Our students, who bring energy, ideas, and a global outlook to the classroom and beyond. And our alumni, who continue to make an impact in diverse careers around the world.  

What's next?

Now, with our new dean, Prof. Bruce Mutsvairo, AUC looks ahead with confidence. Together, we will continue to innovate in education, strengthen our ties across Faculties, and provide opportunities for our students and staff to grow, to learn, and to make a difference. 

As we celebrate our 16th anniversary, one thing is clear: AUC is more than a place to study. It is a home for curiosity, creativity, and community. And with each new generation, that home becomes stronger.
