Mid-term course evaluations are informal check-ins between students and lecturers about how the course is going so far. They give you the opportunity to share what is working well and what could be improved while the course is still ongoing.
Mid-term evaluations usually include two elements:
Class discussions may take place in one of the following ways:
Class representative discussion (common for 16-week courses)
Each class will appoint two student representatives to lead a 15-minute discussion on the strengths and areas for improvement of the course. After the discussion, the representatives can meet with the lecturer to share the main points raised by the class.
The Class Representative Guidelines and Steps document outlines the process and timeline in more detail. The timeline is flexible and can be adjusted to fit your course schedule.
Lecturer-led conversation (common for 4-week courses)
The lecturer organises a short conversation with the class to gather feedback on how students have experienced the course so far.
In addition to the discussion, students are always given the opportunity to complete a mid-term evaluation form. These are usually shared digitally, but sometimes in hard copy. The form allows students to provide individual and anonymous feedback, giving everyone the opportunity to share their views, including students who may prefer not to speak during the class discussion.
Lecturers and course coordinators may choose the evaluation format that works best for their course, as long as it allows students to provide feedback.
Further information can be found in the Class Representative Guidelines and Steps document.
The mid-term evaluations are an informal part of our quality assurance. They facilitate discussion between the class and the instructor, providing both with a moment to ‘check in’ with each other. The purpose of this evaluation is not to flag major issues with classroom management or methods of teaching instruction. If you are experiencing problems with how your course is taught, it is recommended you first discuss these in person with your lecturer. Should the issues you experience persist, you can reach out to the relevant Head of Studies or submit a complaint via AUC's complaint procedure.
Thank you for participating and for your feedback! If you have any questions about the mid-term evaluation procedure, please send an email to info@auc.nl.
