Instructure (the software company behind our digital learning environment Canvas) has suffered a security incident. On this page you find information on what this breach means for AUC and how we will move forward from here.

Update from the UvA on 13 May:

"Canvas is now available again to students and staff

Based on what we currently know, we believe it is responsible to make Canvas available again. Because delivering education without Canvas creates additional workload for staff and causes stress for students, it is important that we do so as quickly and responsibly as possible.

We can never guarantee that our systems are 100% secure, but supplier Instructure has confirmed that the data obtained during the hack has now been secured. Naturally, we are doing everything we can to ensure a swift and smooth go-live, but it may take a little while before Canvas works exactly as you are used to. In the meantime, we are extra alert to suspicious activities and are closely monitoring Canvas’s performance and security so that we can act quickly if needed.

Logging in

Some users may experience problems logging in with Tiqr or MFA. In that case, we recommend resetting the app. Go to the MFA instructions. If you encounter any other problems when using Canvas, please contact the ICTS Service Desk.

Stay alert

The UvA is doing everything it can to make using systems such as Canvas as smooth and secure as possible for UvA users. This is a shared responsibility. We therefore ask students and staff who use UvA systems to help keep data secure: always be alert to which data you share, where, and through which systems, and ask for advice or help if you are in doubt.

Thank you

We understand that it was very inconvenient that Canvas was unavailable. Thank you for your understanding and patience in this situation. Want to stay informed or have questions? See the links below."

Update: 11 May 2026, 13:15

As stated in this news article by the UvA, Canvas remains offline. UvA technicians are determining how to restore the system to safe use. On Monday, AUC lecturers received an email with advice for alternative systems for teaching while Canvas is unavailable.

Update 8 May 2026:

Universities worldwide are affected, including the UvA and VU. At AUC we use the UvA systems, which means we use the same Canvas environment. We are following the UvA in assessing the impact of this incident and in implementing the solutions that will be provided. For up‑to‑date information from the UvA, please see:

What does this mean for AUC?

  • There is currently no access to Canvas. UvA has taken Canvas offline and it will remain unavailable until further notice. It is not yet clear when it will be safe to use Canvas again. UvA will inform everyone when Canvas can be used safely again.
  • Classes can continue as normal, but exams scheduled for today (Friday 8 May) will have to be postponed if the necessary study materials were only available in Canvas. Your lecturers will inform you about any changes.

How we proceed from here

  • Your lecturers will use email as the main communication channel. Please check your official UvA/AUC email address regularly.
  • Study materials that you would normally find on Canvas will be shared through alternative routes, such as OneDrive, SharePoint or the national university cloud service SURFdrive. You will receive instructions from your lecturers.
  • It is AUC’s intention that classes and assessments continue as normal next week, but without relying on Canvas. Your lecturers will provide a workaround so that you can access all necessary study materials.

We expect more UvA updates throughout today and in the coming days. Please keep a close eye on your official student email.
