Have you completed your first semester at AUC and are you looking to follow an off-campus course? AUC students can take courses at other universities with approval from the Board of Examiners. Learn more about how to find and apply for off-campus courses.

AUC students may take a maximum of 42 off-campus credits to be counted toward the 180 ECTS degree requirements and are encouraged to take advantage of this policy (study abroad credits and 30EC internships count toward the 42 credit maximum). Permission from the Board of Examiners (BoE) is required when taking any off-campus course that contributes to the AUC degree. The BoE determines which AUC degree requirement(s) the off-campus course(s) may fulfil. All information about off-campus courses is contained in the AUC Academic Standards and Procedures (AS&P; see AS&P article 2.10 for full details) and in the Board of Examiners Rules and Guidelines

Keep in mind that course registration procedures vary per university and each faculty determines whether courses are open to AUC students and which courses they can take. Links to the requirements for the University of Amsterdam and Vrije University can be found at the bottom of this page. More details about studying abroad, which is separate from off-campus courses, can be found here.

1. Important points to consider

  • Who can take an off-campus course

Off-campus courses can only be taken by students after completing their first semester at AUC (AS&P 2.10.2).

  • What qualifies as an off-campus course

Any university course may be approved as long as it meets the requirements of the AS&P and the Off-campus course guidelines. This includes courses offered in the Bachelor Programmes of both UvA and VU. In addition, a course must be graded in order to be counted for credit and towards your AUC degree.

  • When to submit a request for an off-campus course

An off-campus course request must be submitted to the Board of Examiners six weeks prior to the start of the course (AS&P art. 2.10.4). Please note that getting accepted into the course and obtaining permission from the Board of Examiners are two separate processes that are best pursued in parallel.

Often, it will be necessary to submit your application to the BoE while you are still waiting to be accepted into the course, as otherwise you may be too late for Board of Examiners’ approval (Off-campus course guidelines, section 2.1).

  • Where can off-campus courses be taken

An off-campus course is a course at UvA, VU, or at another accredited university. Off-campus courses exclusively taught online cannot count toward AUC's degree requirements (AS&P 2.10.1).

  • Why take an off-campus course

There can be many reasons why a student might want to take an off-campus course. One example is a course that is important to a student’s programme plan and isn’t offered at AUC in general or in a specific semester, including a particular language level. Students can also request to take an off-campus course which is offered at AUC if availability clashes with the student’s curriculum planning (e.g., time clashes with other required courses). You should first discuss with your tutor if you are interested in an off-campus course.

2. Steps for finding, applying, registering and completing an off-campus course

  • Step 1: Research

Research courses/universities in consultation with your tutor. More information about particular faculties at UvA and VU can be found below. Specific information to seek out when researching a particular off-campus course can include:

    • Are AUC students able to take the course?
    • When is the registration deadline?
    • Is there an available seat?
    • Do I meet the prerequisites?
    • Ask for the course manual and determine contact hours
  • Step 2: Request BoE Permission

Once a course at a specific university has been identified, you must request permission from the Board of Examiners via the AUC Digital Service Desk at least six weeks before the beginning of the course. Students must include their major and provide relevant course information available to them, in accordance with the off-campus course guidelines.

We recommend submitting your request ten weeks in advance of the course start date, as waiting until you are officially accepted into the course may be too late.

  • Step 3: Register at the host university

Register for the course at UvA/VU/other universities. Please note that you can register for the course before receiving BoE approval, but said approval is needed to count the course toward any graduation requirements and to appear on your AUC transcript. More information about UvA and VU registration can be found below.

  • Step 4: Notification and registration of grades

In order for an off-campus course grade to be registered in your AUC records, please follow the instructions below and notify AUC as soon as the grade is available. If you wait to do this until the end of your final semester, this may lead to delays in your graduation check.

For courses at the UvA: Please let AUC know via the AUC Digital Service Desk or via servicedesk@auc.nl once your grade has been processed in SIS.

For courses at the VU/other universities: upon completion of the course, the host university will need to send a certified copy of the transcript directly to secretary-boe@uva.nl. The student desk at the host university can coordinate this. The transcript will need the following information:

    • Official title of the course
    • Number of ECTS credits
    • A grade.

The Board of Examiners decides on the approval of credit transfer and grade conversion. Grades obtained in the Netherlands that are on a numerical 1 – 10 scale are included in the GPA calculation (AS&P 3.8). Any other grades are not converted and do not count towards the GPA. Courses with grades that do not count towards the GPA are listed as pass/fail on the diploma supplement. The original grades from the host university will appear on their original transcript that is included as an appendix to the diploma supplement (see AS&P 2.10.7).

3. How to file a request for an off-campus course with the Board of Examiners

Off-campus course requests must be submitted via the Digital AUC Service Desk. For information on the procedure for submitting an off-campus course request, please refer to the Off-campus Course Guidelines 2026-27 (PDF, 7 p.).

4. Off-campus course criteria and previously approved off-campus courses

For information on the criteria used by the Board of Examiners, please refer to section 3 of the Off-campus Course Guidelines 2026-2027 (PDF, 7p.).

The below catalogue contains a list of off-campus courses that have previously been approved by the Board of Examiners during the past two years. Please note that the Board of Examiners reviews prior approvals yearly to account for any changes in the off-campus courses and the AUC curriculum. Past approval of an off-campus course does not guarantee future approval. This catalogue is intended as a planning tool only and should not be relied upon as confirmation of approval. Students must submit an off-campus course request to the Board of Examiners 6 weeks before the start of the course, as per art. 2.10.4 AS&P 2026- 2027.

    Registration procedure

To register, please take the following steps:

    1. Contact dr. Yurii Khomskii (y.d.khomskii@uva.nl) via email. Please include information about the Econometrics course you would like to register for and relevant courses you have already taken (at AUC) to prepare for this off-campus course. A study plan will be helpful. Dr. Khomskii will ascertain whether your existing knowledge and skills suffice to meet the entry requirement(s).
    2. If dr. Khomskii confirms that you meet the course entry requirement(s), you can register for the chosen off-campus Econometrics course in Glass, during the regular course registration periods. Please note that enrolment is not guaranteed. For some courses, limited places might be available. Final decisions about enrolment are taken by staff in the Bachelor Econometrics and Data Science, not by AUC.
    3. If your enrolment in the off-campus course has been confirmed, please submit an off-campus course request to AUC’s Board of Examiners through AUC’s Digital Servicedesk. The Board of Examiners has preapproved the above list of Econometrics courses, but only for the AUC degree requirements mentioned. Your off-campus course request thus serves an administrative purpose, to ensure information about your off-campus course is registered properly. If you overlook to submit a request, the off-campus course cannot be used to meet an AUC degree requirement.
