Studying abroad often comes with additional costs for travel, housing, and daily life. This page helps you prepare financially by outlining the main funding options available to you once you’ve been accepted by your host university.

Overview of funding options

Overview of funding options
  • 1. Erasmus+ scholarship

The Erasmus+ programme is funded by the European Commission and supports exchanges within Europe. Students going to an AUC or VU partner in Europe may apply for the Erasmus+ grant.

    • If you are going to an AUC European partner or UvA-wide destination in Europe, the UvA Erasmus Office will inform you about how to apply.
    • For VU destinations, the VU International Office will provide instructions.
    • You are automatically enrolled in the Erasmus+ grant process by enrolling in an exchange at a European university.

    Requirements and application

You must be unconditionally accepted by a UvA partner university within Europe (EU/EEA, plus Serbia and Türkiye; excluding Switzerland and the UK).

About 5–6 months before the start of your exchange, you will be added to the Erasmus+ Canvas course with all application details and required documents.

    Top-ups

If you receive the Erasmus+ grant, you may be eligible for:

    • Green travel top-up (for sustainable travel to the host country)
    • Inclusion top-up (for students facing economic, disability or health-related barriers)

Details will be provided in the Canvas course once you are selected.

  • 2. AUF scholarship

AUC students can apply for an individual travel grant from the Amsterdam University Fund (AUF). To qualify, you must:

    • Go abroad for an exchange, research, internship or fieldwork for credit
    • Demonstrate financial need (with a letter from a UvA student counsellor)
    • Be going abroad for the first time as part of your studies

Conditions and deadlines are available on the AUF website.

  • 3. Search engines for other scholarships

There are many private funds with very specific criteria (for example, residency, heritage or gender). You can explore options through:

For more information about private funds, visit the Uva Private Funds page.

  • 4. Student finance and public transport allowance (DUO)

    Student finance

In most cases, you can keep your student finance during your exchange, as long as:

    • You are enrolled as a full-time UvA student and paying tuition
    • Your courses abroad are recognised within your programme
    • Your stay abroad does not exceed one academic year

If you receive Dutch study finance based on employment and you are not a Dutch national, you cannot receive this grant during your exchange. For questions, contact DUO directly.

    Public transport allowance (OV-kaart compensation)

You may apply for a public transport allowance to replace your OV-kaart while abroad.

    To apply:

    1. Fill in the DUO form “Verklaring Onderwijsinstelling bij tijdelijke studie of stage in buitenland”
    2. Log in with DigiD to submit
    3. Complete the first part yourself
    4. Have the second part completed by:
    5. the AUC International Office (via Digital Service Desk), or
    6. the UvA/VU Central Student Service Desk (if going to a UvA/VU partner)
    7. Stop your student travel product before departure

You will receive the allowance only for the actual months you are studying abroad.
