When you go on exchange, you may request permission to sublet your room for your temporary absence. Because of the AUC–DUWO agreement, subletting is only allowed under strict conditions and to approved categories of subtenants.

Subletting rules

AUC guarantees housing for all enrolled students through its agreement with DUWO. As part of this agreement, AUC students are required to keep a DUWO rental contract throughout their studies. Only after graduation or withdrawal from AUC does the contract end.

As the AUC exchange programme is based on reciprocity, students going abroad are expected to sublet their room to incoming exchange students or other AUC candidates when there is a need for rooms. This ensures that incoming exchange students can take your place while you are abroad. Only if there is a surplus of rooms will you be allowed to sublet to a candidate of your own.

If you do not wish to sublet, you may terminate your DUWO contract for the duration of your exchange. Upon return, you will be assigned a new room at random. Your preferred room type cannot be guaranteed.

Illegal subletting without permission is strictly prohibited and may result in eviction and legal action by DUWO.

Subletting your room: a step-by-step guide

  • 1. Submit the sublet form

To arrange a sublet, you must complete the sublet form by the stated deadline. The form can be found at the bottom of this page under Important documents. You will be asked to provide:

    • details about your room
    • your departure and return dates

The AUC International Office will inform you at least one month before departure whether you will be matched to an incoming exchange student, another AUC candidate, or whether you may sublet to your own candidate.

  • 2. Wait for your match

The AUC International Office will inform

To arrange a sublet, complete the sublet form by the stated deadline (found at the bottom of this page under Important documents). Provide:

    • details about your room

    • your departure and return dates

The AUC International Office will then inform you at least one month before departure whether you will be:

    • matched with an incoming exchange student

    • matched with another AUC candidate

    • allowed to sublet to your own candidate

Do not arrange anything before receiving this confirmation.

    • you are matched with an incoming exchange student
    • you are matched with another AUC candidate
    • you are allowed to sublet to your own candidate

You do not need to arrange anything before receiving this confirmation.

  • 3. Arrange the sublet

The procedure depends on your housing type:

    • Single room → residence stewardship (huisbewaring)
    • Shared apartment → subletting (onderhuur)

Once matched, it is your responsibility to:

    • prepare and sign the rental agreement
    • submit the required permission forms to AUC or DUWO (depending on the type of subtenant)
    • inform your subtenant about DUWO tenancy regulations and residence services

The matching email will explain the required steps in detail.

  • 4. Request formal permission

The required permission depends on who you sublet to:

    • Exchange student or AUC candidate
Submit the AUC Request Permission to Sublet Form.
    • Own candidate
Submit the AUC Request Permission to Sublet While on Exchange Form. After AUC approval, request permission directly from DUWO.

Both permission forms can be found at the bottom of this page under the section "Important documents".

  • 5. Take responsibility as the main tenant

The sublet agreement is between you and your subtenant; AUC and DUWO are not a party to this contract.

Please ensure a smooth handover and a welcoming experience. Incoming exchange students make AUC’s exchange programme possible, and a positive arrangement benefits both sides.
