Walking tour through colonial and post-colonial Amsterdam

As the capital of one of the major European colonial powers, Amsterdam is an archive of the country’s colonial past and the postcolonial present. Archives, libraries but also public spaces, buildings and monuments remind us that the past is ever present. A clear example is the ’Indische Buurt’, a neighborhood close to AUC. The street names in this neighborhood, refer to islands from the Indonesian archipelago or historical figures who played a role in the colonial history of the Netherlands.

The walk will take participants to various sites in the city where the different layers of history and its reverberations. We will discuss how history and memory are different but intertwined and societal developments in the last decades have urged a re-assessment of the past.
