These instructions are for current AUC first-year students who want to move to a different room in the student residences for their second and third year. If you wish to move to a different room, you will need to register by 31 March 2026. If you don't, you will stay in your current room until the end of your third year.

Register for the internal move
Please read all instructions on this page carefully before registering. Registration must be completed using the form below by 31 March 2026.

2. Conditions for participating in the internal move

To participate in the internal move, you must:

  • register for an internal move no later than 31 March 2026
  • pay the internal moving administrative fee of €24,88 before 9 April 2026
  • be in Amsterdam between 15 and 18 July 2026 to move (or arrange for someone to move on your behalf).

If you do not meet these conditions, you will remain in your current room under your existing contract.

3. What you need to know before you decide to move

  • 3.1 Rent price and new point system

    National housing and rent rules have changed since you first moved in. If you move to a new room, your new rent may be higher than what you are paying now because of an adjusted point system.

    New rent prices for each room will be visible in uh.room.nl after they are confirmed, from 1 May onwards. 

    In contrast, if you stay in your current room, your rent can only be adjusted for inflation until the end of your contract.

  • 3.2 Moving into a 4-person apartment

    If you want to move into a 4-person apartment, first discuss this with the students who you would like to live with. After you’ve come to an agreement, please contact housing@auc.nl to share your plan and learn more about your options.

  • 3.3 Mixed-sex apartments and gender identity

    The uh.room.nl allocation system by default only allows same-sex combinations, based on the sex listed in your passport.

    If you want to share an apartment with someone whose sex (as listed in their passport) is different from yours, you’ll need to request this. First, make sure you and your potential roommate(s) agree to live in a mixed-sex apartment and then send an email housing@auc.nl so we can arrange this manually.

    If your gender identity or expression is a factor in your housing process, please contact the Student Life Officers at studentlifeofficer@auc.nl. They’ll discuss your situation with you confidentially and help you explore your options for a suitable living situation.

  • 3.4 Which rooms will be available?

    Nearly all available rooms will be those of departing third-year students and rooms of students who are leaving AUC before finishing their programme.

    Note that not all rooms will be available for internal moves. A number of single rooms are reserved for incoming first-year students with medical conditions.

    You cannot move into the room of another first-year student. Rooms of students who are doing an internal move only become available after their move is completed and are not yet visible to other first-years.

4. Internal move procedure explained

  • Step 1 – Register by 31 March

    Register for the internal move process no later than 31 March 2026. If you do not register, your current contract will stay the same and you will keep your room until the end of your third year.

     

  • Step 2 – Pay the internal move fee by 9 April

    Pay the internal moving administrative fee of €24,88 no later than 9 April 2026. If you do not pay by this date, you will not be able to participate in the internal move. You will be invited to pay the fee through an email sent to your AUC student email address. The payment is processed through AUC Portal.

     

     

  • Step 3 – Check the available rooms on 7 May

    On 7 May 2026, you will be able to see all rooms that are available for internal moves in uh.room.nl. Use this time to compare room types, locations and rent, and make a short list of rooms you prefer.

  • Step 4 – Select your new room on 8 May

    On 8 May 2026 you will be able to select a room between 12:00 and 17:00.

    Room selection works on a first-come, first-served basis. You cannot reserve a room in advance. Any eligible student can choose any room that is listed as available in the system.

    Once you choose a room and confirm it, your current housing contract’s end date will become 15 July (you can return the keys until 18 July) and a new contract for your new address will be created from 15 July onward.

    Once you confirm your choice, you cannot change your room again during the internal move.

  • Step 5 – Sign your contract and pay the first month’s rent by 22 May

    By this date you must sign your new housing contract and pay the first month’s rent for your new room. If you do not complete this in time, your new contract will be cancelled.

5. Furniture and other items

  • After you have signed your new contract, contact the departing student of your new room as soon as possible.
  • Discuss which furniture or other items you might want to take over and what will be removed, cleaned or repaired before you move in.
  • You do not have to take over any items from the departing student. In many cases, however, taking over items is convenient, cheaper and more sustainable than buying everything new.

6. Receiving your keys and moving in July

  • Collecting keys for your new room

    On 15 July 2026, after 10:00, you can collect the keys for your new room.

    There are two ways to arrange this:

    1. The departing student returns their keys to DUWO and you collect your new keys from DUWO.
    2. You agree directly with the departing student on a time to receive the keys. In that case you must inform DUWO that you have made this arrangement so that they know they do not need to manage the key handover.
  • Returning keys for your old room

    Returning keys for your old room

    You must return the keys for your old room by 10:00 on 18 July 2026 to the DUWO caretakers in Room 794A, or leave them in the mailbox for 794A. Clearly label your keys with your name and room number.

    Before you return the keys, make sure you have moved all your belongings and cleaned and cleared your old room according to DUWO’s instructions as they will perform a room inspection between 18 July and 1 August.

7. Checklist for the internal move

To participate in the internal move in 2026, make sure you:

  • register for the internal move by 31 March
  • pay the €24,88 internal move fee by 9 April
  • check available rooms in uh.room.nl from 7 May
  • choose your room on 8 May between 12:00 and 17:00
  • sign your new contract and pay the first month’s rent by 22 May
  • arrange furniture and item takeover with the departing student
  • arrange how you will exchange keys
  • will be in Amsterdam to move between 15 and 18 July
  • return the keys of your old room by 10:00 on 18 July
