Abstract

This lecture will explore Julius Martov’s pivotal role in the Russian revolutionary movement and the legacy of democratic socialism in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

Topics will include:

  • Democratic socialism and its modern challenges
  • The interplay of autocracy and egalitarianism in Russian history
  • The revolutions of 1905 and 1917 and their democratic experiments
  • How technological and societal shifts are reshaping democracy today
  • The shortcomings and fragilities of modern democratic regimes

Join us to discuss the relevance of these revolutionary developments for contemporary debates on democracy and political change.

Speaker

Prof. Daniel Aarão Reis is full professor emeritus of contemporary history at Fluminense Federal University (UFF) and a senior researcher at CNPq. He is visiting professor at the UFF Institute of Strategic Studies and author of numerous influential works, including Dictatorship and Democracy in Brazil, Luis Carlos Prestes, a Revolutionary Between Two Worlds, The Revolution That Changed the World: Russia, 1917, and Running the Risk of Falling.

The lecture will be delivered via Zoom from Rio de Janeiro.
