What does it mean to be human today? The Achille Mbembe Challenge invites students to explore this question through creativity and critical thinking. All forms of expression are welcome in this national competition honouring a leading global thinker.

This year, the prestigious Spinozalens 2024 is awarded to philosopher and political theorist Achille Mbembe, known for his profound reflections on postcolonialism, democracy and the future of humanity. To honour his work and engage young thinkers across the country, the Achille Mbembe Challenge invites students to take part in a national creative and intellectual competition.

  • Deadline to submit: 8 September 2025

  • Open to all forms of expression: essays, videos, podcasts, art, poetry, music or any other creative medium

  • Theme: What does it mean to be human in the 21st century?

Why join?

This is your chance to respond to the central ideas in Mbembe’s work—on identity, memory, power and connectedness—in your own way. Selected entries will be featured on the Spinozalens website, and winners will be invited to the Spinozalens award ceremony in November, where Achille Mbembe himself will be present.

Who can participate?

All students in Dutch secondary and higher education—so that means you! Whether you're into philosophy, art, politics or storytelling, this is a space for your voice. For more information on this challenge and how to apply, visit the challenge's website.

We encourage you to take this opportunity to reflect, create, and share your perspective with a wider audience. Let your voice be part of the conversation.
