  • Faculty of Law and Economics, University of Amsterdam – Internship

Fatjon Kaja is recruiting research assistant(s) to work in a variety of research projects that he has embarked. Below you will find two abstracts of the most recent projects that students can anticipate working on:

    1. My PhD dissertation explores the societal role of corporations by examining how corporate purpose has been historically framed and legally enforced. I challenge the modern notion that corporate purpose is a broad, self-defined goal by demonstrating that, historically, corporate charters—particularly under the UK system—were granted with explicitly public-oriented purposes and were subject to legal enforcement. Through the case study of the Massachusetts Bay Company, I show that charter revocations were a direct consequence of corporations exceeding their prescribed roles, emphasizing the historical role of law in maintaining a well-defined corporate purpose. I also analyze corporate commitment to purpose through a game-theoretic lens, arguing that corporations will rationally avoid binding themselves to a purpose unless legally required. In the past, legal mechanisms ensured such commitment, but today, these mechanisms have largely disappeared, removing incentives for corporations to adhere to their stated goals. However, I identify "outlier corporations"—rare cases where firms commit to a purpose even in the absence of legal enforcement. By bridging insights from law, economics, and organizational theory, my research reignites the debate on whether legal mechanisms should be reinstated to ensure corporate accountability and alignment with societal needs. Among the tasks that students in this project will do is scholarship research, Bluebook citations, and APA formatting. Additional tasks can be developed in consultation.
    2.  My second project explores whether legal changes can reign a modern corporation to be committed to a particular corporate purpose. The project begins by discussing the legal framework's evolution towards prioritizing profit maximization and shareholder interests. Furthermore, it analyzes the language and implications of contemporary corporate charters in defining corporate purpose. The preferred methodological choice for such a project would be empirical data to assess the impact of legal changes on corporate behavior and performance. This topic will be narrowed down even further. The data will be provided to the student, or the student will access them via the Center for Research in Security Prices (CSRP) at Wharton (access details will be given to the student). Furthermore, the student will be given “sample” R codes, but the student is expected to conduct quite a bit of analysis on their own. Biweekly meetings are expected at the very least. Please only apply for the second position if you have knowledge of R (other statistical tools) and are familiar with statistics/econometrics!

    Tasks

Student research assistants (RAs) contribute to all levels of our work, from research and writing to data analysis, visualization, and design. You will work collaboratively with the full-time research staff on the project, who might be scattered all around the world. Student RAs will receive training and consistent feedback in terms of what is expected of them. Students will create PowerPoint presentations of various scholarship, will work on the citations, and will delve in more complex work dependent on their skillset.

Hours of work per week (tentative)

At a minimum, a 0.1 FTE appointment. Please note that we will abide by all the criteria that the CP/I program requests.

    Period

    September 2025 – ongoing.

    Student requirements

    • Strong organizational, interpersonal, communication, and analytical skills are required, as are excellent writing skills in English.
    • Proven research skills strongly preferred with a particular emphasis on scientific research and an ability to convey scientific concepts to the general public.
    • Students with a background in law or economics or in their final year of studies have an advantage.
    • Familiarity with PowerPoint and APA format (and willing to learn the Bluebook citation) is a MUST.

    Contact information

To apply, please send your CV and a copy of your transcript under the subject line “Research Assistant” before July 1.
